Changing the knobs is the cheapest meaningful change you can make to a kitchen. A full set for twenty cabinet doors costs less than a single mid-range pendant light, takes an afternoon, and is the first thing anyone notices when they walk in. It is also, judging by the questions we get, the job people most often have to do twice.
Almost always for the same reason: the knob was the wrong size, or it went in the wrong spot. Both are avoidable with a tape measure and ten minutes of thinking.

Knob or pull? Decide this first
A knob has one screw. A pull or handle has two. That single difference drives most of the decision.
Knobs suit doors. A cabinet door swings, and your hand meets it at a point rather than along a line. A knob is the natural shape for that motion, and it needs only one hole, which means one chance to drill wrong instead of two.
Pulls suit drawers. A drawer is dragged straight out, often loaded, sometimes with wet or full hands. A horizontal bar spreads that force across four fingers. A knob on a heavy pan drawer concentrates it into a pinch grip, and on a wide drawer it also tends to make the drawer rack in its runners because you are pulling from a single point.
The common compromise is knobs on all doors and pulls on all drawers, which is why so many kitchens look that way. It works because it follows the mechanics.
Two exceptions worth knowing. Anyone with limited grip strength or arthritis will find pulls significantly easier everywhere, including on doors — if that applies to someone in the house, choose pulls throughout and ignore convention. And on very narrow drawers, under about 12 inches, a single centred knob often looks better than a stubby pull.
Sizing: the numbers that matter
Knob diameter is measured across the widest point of the head. The usable range for cabinetry runs from about 1 inch to 1.5 inches (25–38 mm).
- 1 to 1.25 inches — the standard for most kitchen and wardrobe doors. If you are unsure, 1.25 inches is the safest single choice.
- 1.25 to 1.5 inches — better on tall pantry doors, wide wardrobe fronts, and anything with a substantial frame. A small knob on a large door looks apologetic.
- Under 1 inch — reserve for small drawers, glass-front cabinets, and delicate furniture. On a full-size kitchen door they disappear.
The other dimension nobody checks is projection: how far the knob stands off the face. Anything under about 0.75 inches is awkward to get a finger behind, particularly for larger hands. If the knob has a slim neck and a wide head, projection matters less because the head gives you something to hook.
Scale to the door, not to the room. A large kitchen full of small cabinet doors still wants modestly sized knobs.
Placement: where the knob actually goes
This is the step that produces the reinstalls.
On a full-overlay door (the flat modern kind with no visible frame), position the knob 2.5 to 3 inches in from the corner on both axes. On an upper cabinet, that corner is the bottom outer corner — the one nearest where your hand arrives. On a lower cabinet, it is the top outer corner. This is the single most useful rule in the whole job: knobs go at the corner closest to your reach.
On a shaker or framed door, centre the knob in the stile — the vertical band of the frame — rather than measuring in from the edge. Then set the height at the same corner logic as above. Centring in the stile is what makes a shaker kitchen look properly fitted; measuring in from the edge instead usually lands the knob slightly off the frame and it reads as a mistake even to people who cannot say why.
On a drawer, if you are using a knob, centre it both horizontally and vertically on the drawer face. On a very tall drawer front, moving it slightly above centre often looks better.
On a pair of doors that meet in the middle, mirror the positions so the two knobs sit at the same height and equidistant from the centre line. Measure both from the outer edge, not from the meeting point, or any variation in the gap between doors will show.

Ceramic and stone knobs read softer than metal and suit painted or shaker fronts particularly well.
Screws, and the thing that ruins installation day
Knobs ship with a machine screw, almost always M4, and the length supplied assumes a door of average thickness — usually around 18 to 20 mm.
Two problems come up. If your doors are thicker than average, the supplied screw will not reach far enough into the knob to hold. If they are thinner, the screw bottoms out inside the knob before it clamps, and the knob spins forever no matter how much you tighten it.
Measure your door thickness before ordering. The screw needs to pass through the door and engage roughly 8 to 10 mm into the knob. Longer screws are cheap and available at any hardware shop, but discovering you need them halfway through a Saturday is annoying.
If a knob spins after tightening, the screw is too long, not too short. Add a washer or shorten the screw.
Materials, and how they age
Zinc alloy is the volume material for cabinet hardware — it casts into detailed shapes cheaply and takes plating well. Quality varies with the plating rather than the alloy, so look at finish thickness rather than the base metal.
Solid brass is heavier, more expensive, and ages gracefully. Unlacquered brass will darken with handling, most visibly around the part your fingers touch, which some people love and others find untidy. Lacquered brass holds its colour but the lacquer can wear through at contact points after several years.
Ceramic and porcelain suit painted, shaker and period furniture. They chip if struck hard, so think twice on a low cabinet in a busy kitchen where a saucepan might swing.
Stone and marble give real weight and no two are identical, which is either the appeal or the drawback depending on how much you value consistency across a run of twenty.
Leather and knurled brass have both moved from niche to mainstream. Knurling in particular grips well with damp hands, which makes it practical as well as decorative.

Finish, and the mistake people make with mixing
Match your cabinet hardware to the largest, most visible metal in the room rather than the smallest. In a kitchen that usually means the tap. In a bedroom it might be the wardrobe rail or a light fixture.
Mixing metals works, but it needs a rule behind it. The reliable version is to keep all the hardware on one plane consistent — every cabinet in the kitchen the same finish — and let a different metal appear on a separate element like the lighting or the tap. What reads as accidental is a run of cabinets where some knobs are brass and some are chrome for no visible reason.
Worth noting that finish names are not standardised across suppliers. Two products both described as antique brass can be visibly different. If you are ordering from more than one place, or topping up an old set, order a single sample first.
How many to buy, and the spares question
Count doors and drawers separately, then add ten percent. Knobs get dropped during installation, threads get crossed, and one always turns up damaged.
More importantly, hardware ranges get discontinued. If a knob breaks in three years and the line has gone, you are replacing the entire kitchen's worth to keep them matching. Two or three spares in a drawer is cheap insurance against that.
Installation, briefly
Make a drilling template out of a scrap of card or hardboard: mark the hole position once, check it against a door, then use that same template for every door of the same type. Doing it this way is faster than measuring each door and it guarantees consistency, which is what the eye actually notices.
Drill from the front face into scrap wood clamped behind, which prevents the bit blowing out a chip on the back as it exits. Use a bit slightly larger than the screw shank — typically 5 mm for an M4 screw — so there is a little tolerance for alignment.
Tighten by hand at the end. A power driver will strip an M4 machine screw or crack a ceramic knob without much warning.
